President Leonel Fernandez and the William Paterson University signed an agreement on Wednesday setting up an exchange program for students and faculty staff, following a speech by the Dominican leader on the importance of education in his country, as reported in NorthJersey.com
Fernandez spoke of his vision to transform the Dominican Republic with a hi-tech-based economy so that the country may become a leader in software production and biotechnology.
The key, he said was "prioritizing education as a basic need we have, to fulfill our dream of stable democracy".
Fernandez was addressing a crowd of about 600 faculty, staff, students and community members at the University's Shea Center for Performing Arts. He visited the campus during a side trip to meeting with other world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.
WPU President Kathleen Waldron signed for the New Jersey university.
Not only do students earn higher degrees, Fernandez said they are "also learning a culture, learning a language, learning a new way of understanding and looking at things".
He added: "Unless you understand what is taking place around the world, it is not possible to make a contribution to your country".
North Jersey has one of the largest Dominican populations in the country, according to community leaders. A Paterson-based Institute for Latino Studies census shows there are 250,000 Dominicans living in the Garden State. The cities with the highest number of Dominicans in the state include Paterson, Perth Amboy, Passaic, Newark, Union City, Jersey City, West New York, North Bergen and Camden.
