Speaking at Hostos Community College in New York yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez declared that the Dominican Republic is going through a genuine education revolution that will conclude with the creation of citizens for what he defined as the "Era of Knowledge," as reported in Hoy. He said that individuals with high educational levels are required in order to strengthen democracy.
"Knowledge provides the tools to be prepared for the great challenges of these times. A country with trained human resources is a country destined to progress," he said. President Fernandez described the country's great advances in economic matters, while highlighting the fact that economic growth needs to be accompanied by quality education. He told his audience of students and professors that the country is achieving great changes in the educational model that will translate into the training of individuals with the capacity to resolve conflicts and be more creative. He said the government has sent 8,000 students to study abroad and that 10,000 more will benefit from the scholarships in 2012.
