In his column in today's Hoy newspaper, commentator Claudio Acosta accuses President Leonel Fernandez of using his oratory skills to blame "unforeseen circumstances, both internal and external, as reasons for the country lagging far behind in fulfilling the Millennium Goals at the 65th United Nations General Assembly. He says that the President blamed the 2003 domestic financial crisis and the increases in petroleum and food prices.
"Why would he have gone there to say that the struggle to meet the Millennium Development Goals was hindered because his government chose to invest US$900 million in the first line of the metro, and once completed began the second one without knowing where the funds would come from to complete it? Why use that forum to explain, with figures from the Department for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption that the obstacle for those objectives is the rampant corruption that bleeds the public finances and impoverishes the vast majority of our population more and more each day? Why should he incriminate himself by recognizing that he has never cared to meet the law that allocates 4% of the GDP in education?" he asks.
