Four senators from the ruling PLD party have called for the resignation of government officials who they say appear to be tired and are not fulfilling their obligations to the electorate. They singled out Agriculture Minister Salvador (Chio) Jimenez and Minister of Public Works Victor Diaz Rua.
Senators Sonia Mateo of Dajabon, Adriano Sanchez Roa of Elias Pina, Carlos Castillo of San Jose de Ocoa and Euclides Sanchez of La Vega were critical of what they described as the poor work record of these government officials. Senator Mateo complained that some government officials do nothing and don't care about the situation in the border regions. She said that there is no chance of development without highways and roads, adding that these officials were harming the Fernandez government. Castillo complained that the poor state of roads affects his province that produces 35% of the vegetables consumed in the country. He said the roads and bridges were still in poor condition after the Noel and Olga storms in 2007.
Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez called on his PLD colleagues to be prudent, saying that their statements would be used against the government's aspirations to continue in power after the 2012 presidential election. "Do not complain if some of your statements later appear in opposition party spots," said Pared Perez.
Spokesman for the PLD in the Senate, Felix Nova Paulino (Bonao) said that the senators have a commitment towards their constituents and do not seek to harm the government but are reacting to the inertia of some government officials, as reported in Listin Diario.
