The Consumer Protection Institute (Pro-Consumidor) has announced a ban on sales of sulphuric and nitric acid. The acid, known here as "acido del diablo" and sold for unblocking drains, is also used as a lethal weapon.
The Burn Unit at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital has long campaigned for a ban on the sale of the acid products in supermarkets and stores, citing the cases of 18 people with major injuries in 2009, including 3 deaths. One of the leading brands using the acid is called El Plomerito. Pro-Consumidor reached an agreement with representatives of shops and hardware stores to stop stocking the product. The products can now only be sold for industrial processes, and specialized firms in order to prevent them from being readily available to the general public. Dr. Carlos Sanchez of the Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital said the decision is a major contribution to reducing violence. A report from the hospital says that in the past 18 years, 3,800 cases of burns caused by "acido del diablo" have been reported.
