The director of the Metropolitan Bus Service Office (OMSA) has told reporters that he will have to become "Mandrake the Magician" in order to get the service to function, as he faced a RD$31 million reduction in his budget over the last two months. Just last week Ignacio Ditren said that he would like to have 1000 new buses to provide a decent service for strap-hangers. OMSA is supposed to receive RD$80 million per month, but the recent increases in the price of fuel have led to a serious deficit in the unit's budget. Ditren said that he had informed President Fernandez of the situation. According to Ditren, he needs an additional 20 to 30 new buses on each route to cover the demand. However, given OMSA's financial constraints, Ditren says that he will be spending 30% of his budget on repairs and maintenance of existing units, and not on purchasing the 200 units that he had budgeted.
