Police arrest 54 in sweeps

The National Police has carried out sweeps in the Los Pinos, Maria Auxiliadora, 27 de Febrero, La Cienaga and Los Guandules areas of Santo Domingo, arresting 54 people wanted for questioning or fugitives from justice. Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez said that he headed up the 800-man contingent of cops who were trying to enforce 150 arrest warrants issued by the courts. Along with the fugitives, the police found guns, drugs and military uniforms as well as vehicles that were not correctly documented. Among those arrested was the well known "Papote" who is implicated in various killings in Santo Domingo. Santana Paez said that magistrates had issued just 150 warrants out of the 500 requested by the police, but he still thanked the head of the Supreme Court, Jorge Subero Isa for his cooperation with the raids.
