Santo Domingo.- The minister of Tourism yesterday announced the installation of security cameras in the country’s main tourism regions, including Santo Domingo’s seaside Malecon, to provide more security for visitors.

Francisco Javier Garcia said the system will contribute more safety for the tourists and prevent crime.

The official also defended the work of the Tourism Police (Politur) in the main tourist regions and in Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, to prevent the assaults and fraud against tourists. He said Politur’s work in those areas visited by many tourist has contributed so that crime isn’t felt in those places.

Garcia said the installation of the vigilance system is to achieve a preventive effect against crime and therefore the heightened safety for the more than four million tourists who visit the country yearly.

The Tourism minister said the system will be installed in the areas of Sosúa and Cabarete in the north; Bavaro and Punta Cana in the east; Juan Dolio and Boca Chica in the south, and in Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone and Malecon.

He said the project, now under study and with several interested companies having made proposals, may begin operating by year end or the start of 2011.
