Investigative TV journalist Nuria Piera revealed this weekend that National Assets (Bienes Nacionales) director Elias Wessin Chavez had asked the Executive Branch to declare land belonging to his wife and her family "eminent domain" to be used for a housing project in the south eastern province of San Pedro de Macoris. The reporter also said that the price per square meter was overvalued.
According to El Caribe, the lands in Parcel 67 of Cadastral District 16-6 do not have a title registered at the National Cadastral office and have not been surveyed. The lands were due to be transferred from Wessin Chavez's wife Angie Isidra Maria Romero Fuentes and other family members. Nuria Piera said that the price of a meter of land was quoted at a value corresponding to the city center, not rural lands. She said that President Fernandez was tricked into approving the request in just four months, although the Ministry of Hacienda has yet to pay for the lands. The sum involved is close to RD$70 million.
