Junot Diaz and Rhina Espaillat were honored during ceremonies celebrating Dominican Week in the United States. The ceremony, which was held at the Dominican Embassy in Washington, D.C. was hosted by Luis Heredia Bonetti and Bertha Nin de Saladin, the wife of the Dominican ambassador. According to Hoy newspaper, Junot Diaz, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature with his book "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" and Rhina Espaillat, the winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry spoke about their work. Espaillat said that she had been away from the country that she memorializes in her poetry for 71 years. Diaz said that although they left, they did not really leave, and he said that the religious, business and political leaders of the country "aren't worth much" when it comes to defending the nation, only the "artists". Dominican Week is organized by the law firm of Russin Vecchi & Heredia Bonetti to highlight Dominican-American relations.
