A prisoner, Jimmy Oliver Rodriguez de la Cruz, a convicted drug trafficker who supposedly "escaped" while being moved to jail, was taken out of the country by people hired by his influential relatives. El Caribe reporters received this information from a source in the National Police. According to the source, the 21-year old drug dealer, the son of retired general Robin Rodriguez and Ramona de la Cruz is currently "somewhere in the United States living peacefully with relatives". The former Army corporal was caught with 52 kilos of cocaine and two months later, on 19 August, his escort to the Najayo jail was supposedly "ambushed" by masked men who took him away. Neither Prosecutor General Radhames Jimenez Pena nor the director general of prisons Manuel Perez Sanchez would comment on the case. None of the other members of the commission appointed to investigate the incident would discuss it with newspaper reporters.
But Fray Aristides Jimenez Richardson, Catholic Church coordinator for prisons, said the authorities should arrest and investigate the person who authorized the permit for his transfer to the Armed Forces Hospital. He said the authorities from the Department of Prisons and Najayo should also be under investigation. Interviewed on the TV program El Dia, he asked how long would Dominicans have to put up with so much mockery, as reported in El Caribe. He said this case could be the tip of the iceberg of other, more serious and crueler things that are happening in the DR.
