The population of booby birds in Monte Cristi has increased by around 6,000, according to Ministry of Environment scientists, as reported in 7dias.com.do. The Ministry began counting the number of the seabirds on the Cayos Siete Hermanos islands in Montecristi in July 2009 when it was established that around 8,000 were living on the island. Scientists who returned to the island in July 2010 say there are now around 14,000 birds. The Ministry says the increase is due to the vigilance by the Wild Life Refuge Center. The three booby species that visit are the Sterna fuscata, Anous stolidus and Sterna antillarum. The birds migrate to the US using the Atlantic route. The monitoring on the island that is part of the project Caribbean Biological Corridor began in 2005.
