The Archbishop of Santiago, Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio has criticized people who seek to get rich fast through politics, drug trafficking and other illicit dealings, as reported in today's Listin Diario. There has been a marked increase in thefts, robberies, drug trafficking and other crimes in Santiago.
"In their impatience to get rich easily and quickly many resort to any action and that is the reason behind the increase in crime, not only in this province, but in a large part of the country," he said. His statements join others before him, including evangelical pastors, who have expressed concern about the increase in crime, violence and insecurity.
De la Rosa said: "Many want to give the impression that Santiago is the most insecure city in the country and that is not correct. It is a phenomenon all over Latin America and big cities in Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Argentina".
De la Rosa nevertheless said that people calling for the return of the dictatorship as a better way to fight crime were wrong. He said that in a dictatorship there were no guarantees for security for the regime's enemies and political adversaries. He said that while democracies guarantee human rights and liberties, there is a need to combat crime more efficiently.
"The increase in crime is a problem of these times, not only for people in Santiago but for all Dominicans, and a large part of the world. The answers and measures need to be well thought out, starting to confront the evils that are behind them, not only with repression," he stated.
