Eight stowaways from the DR are now known to have travelled on the MSC Ornella to Buenos Aires, according to reports in Diario Libre and Listin Diario. Unfortunately, one of the eight died. The families of the missing men were told that they had been located. According to family members, the group entered the grounds of the Multi-Modal Port of Caucedo and broke into a container with tools that they had brought for that purpose. According to the newspaper, what remains to be discovered was just how they managed to do this in an area with such strict security measures. The irony was that the men thought that they would be going to the United States not to South America.
The names of the stowaways who had boarded the ship owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company are Maxwell Berlin Matos Vargas, Robert Vasquez Antigua, Dioni Tapia Natera, Geraldo Alcantara Flores, Ricardo Antonio Valera, Pablo Antonio Peguero Garcia and Wellington Gomez. Another man, named only as "Timbolier" threw himself overboard after five days as a stowaway in the ship.
Deputy Minister for Migratory affairs Rosario Graciano de los Santos said the men, who were aged between 19 and 20, lived in the Boca Chica and Rio Haina areas. The ship will bring them home on its return trip in 20 days time.
Dominican ambassador in Buenos Aires Guillermo Pina provided support and assistance to the stowaways.
