Work has begun on a program to reduce the number of "lakes" that form whenever it rains in Santo Domingo. Crews from the municipality and the National Institute for Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) began drilling relief wells for storm drains at Kilometer 11.5 of Av. Independencia. This is the first of 56 critical points in the National District that is noted for its propensity to flood during rains. This first project will consist of drilling between15 and 20 wells that will serve as sumps for carrying off rainwater in the area.
According to Listin Diario, city council general secretary Domingo Contreras, who is supervising the work, told reporters that the next stage would be along the V Centenario roadway, in front of the offices of the Patronage for the Blind.
Other places on the list include Av. San Martin near the corner of Tiradentes, Winston Churchill at the corner of Gustavo Mejia Ricart and Pedro Henriquez Urena between Abraham Lincoln and Tiradentes.
