The Prosecutor General, the Chief of the Police and the chief of the National Drug Control Department held a press conference yesterday to announce the Fernandez administration's latest attempt to fight crime. As reported in Hoy, Prosecutor General Radhames Jimenez Pena announced funding from Spanish cooperation agency, AECID, to be used to train prosecutors. The Prosecutor General announced the three entities were working closely on new strategies to fight crime and reduce impunity.
In an editorial column today, Hoy newspaper says that the meetings need to create real guarantees for security that replace talk with concrete measures against crime and the scandalous repeat crimes that are the product of impunity. "It is clear that insecurity is not a simple perception," says the editorial writer. "Attacks on civilians, police and military personnel, widespread robberies and crime have the citizens cornered and fed up, and the lack of effective actions by the authorities have led people to take justice in their own hands".
The writer says that the country should not waste time making comparisons with crime rates in other countries in the area, and should not accept statements of incompetence to fight crime from the authorities.
