The Police say their agents have shot and killed one of the individuals connected to the murder of Dr. Sergio Rafael Rojas Soriano outside the Botanical Gardens last month. The report says that another of the three men accused of the crime and three other murders was also arrested after a shootout with a police patrol near the "Mundo del Amor" motel on Av. Ortega y Gasset in Cristo Rey. Another person who was accompanying the two men named in the murder investigation was also detained along with two more who were nearby. The Police said that Junior Tonton Santiago (Salivita) died as he was being taken to the Francisco Moscoso Puello Hospital after being wounded in the gunfight after police agents. They tried to arrest him as he left the motel with Samuel Sanchez Montes de Oca (Samuelito), another of those accused of killing the doctor, and Carlos Manuel Pichardo Rojas (Pichon) and two individuals known as 'Cocoliso' and 'Nano', who both escaped capture.
A report in El Nuevo Diario outlines a long list of deadly criminal activity by the group, which the Police say was involved in three other murders and numerous robberies. The Police also report that Samuel Sanchez (Samuelito) had admitted his role in the shooting of the doctor, together with Junior Salavita, Eric Irrizary Rodriguez (Lewi), who is in jail for a killing in Samana, and a man known as 'Cocoliso' who supposedly has the weapon that was used to kill the doctor.
The murder of the doctor made headlines when news reports suggested it may have been a case of mistaken identity. Clave newspaper editor Fausto Adames suspected that he himself was the intended victim and wrote about this in the final edition of the newspaper. The newspaper was closed shortly after publishing a report with statements that linked the former chief of the police to the Atiemar drug scandal.
