Yesterday Amnesty International called upon the Dominican authorities to launch an investigation into the disappearance of Juan Almonte Herrera who is said to have been kidnapped by the police. El Caribe says that in their press release Amnesty underlines their worry "over the frequent complaints of violations of human rights by the Police and security forces in the Dominican Republic".
The Police said Almonte was linked to the case of 20-year old student Eduardo Antonio Baldera Gomez of Nagua, who went missing for 22 days. RD$5 million had been demanded in ransom, but Baldera said he had escaped from his kidnappers in October 2009. The media speculated it had been a staged kidnapping. Francisco Baldera Gomez also made headlines when the family business, a currency exchange house, was suspended by the Superintendence of Banks the following month and had continued operating clandestinely. The Superintendence said they would accuse him of money laundering. Baldera had argued that the company had made the change from Baldera Real Estate to Baldera Exchange House to legalize their situation.
