On his visit to Silicon Valley yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez formalized the Dominican Republic's membership of TiE, the world's largest not-for-profit organization for entrepreneurs. A cooperation agreement was signed between TiE and the DR Center for Export & Investment (CEI-RD).
The agreement opens a platform for the participation of Dominican professionals working in large technology firms such as Microsoft and Intel and owners of small companies in Silicon Valley nurtured by TiE.
President Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno witnessed the signing of the agreement by Eddy Martinez, director of CEI-RD, and Vish Mishra, president of TiE Silicon Valley.
As reported by the Presidency, President Fernandez commented that the agreement would encourage a culture of entrepreneurship in the DR and encourage locals to look into new business areas.
Martinez said that the agreement would foster, through the CyberPark and the DR Software Cluster equipping Dominican entrepreneurs and young people with new ideas and new business projects to promote these ideas so that they become change agents for the Dominican economy. It was also agreed that the DR would take part in the TiE entrepreneurs' conference.
TiE was founded in Silicon Valley in 1992 by a group of successful entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and senior professionals with roots in the Indus region. There are currently more than 11,000 members and over 2,500 charter members in 53 chapters across 12 countries. TiE's mission is to foster entrepreneurship globally through mentoring, networking, and education. Dedicated to the virtuous cycle of wealth creation and giving back to the community, TiE's focus is on generating and nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs.
