The rate of births to teenage mothers is reaching critical levels. A report in Diario Libre says that between January and August this year, 13,975 girls aged 15 to 19 gave birth at public hospitals, according to Ministry of Public Health statistics. Of the babies born to teenage mothers, 187 were stillborn and 192 were underweight. In 2009, of 101,205 births, 36,000 were to adolescents. Most of the girls had not finished high school and most had not even completed their primary school studies.
The Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia Maternity Hospital in Santo Domingo recorded 1,335 teenage births and the San Lorenzo de los Minas Maternity Hospital had 1,112 teenage births. Next on the list are the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez in Santiago, Ricardo Limardo in Puerto Plata, Jaime Mota in Barahona, Taiwan in Azua and Juan Pablo Pina in San Cristobal.
The Hermanas Mirabal hospital in El Seibo has the lowest teenage birthrate, at 11%, which is attributed to joint work by social organizations, the Public Health authorities and the Ministry of Education.
Diario Libre reports that in many cases, the teenagers themselves are children of teenage mothers.
