A 12-year-old Russian, Denis Khokhryakov, who was abandoned by his Russian foster parents in the Dominican Republic in 2005, returned to Russia on Friday. Khokhryakov, the son of an alcoholic single mother from the Volgograd region, had been adopted by Larisa Onopriyenko and Sergei Sologub in 2003, as reported in the Moscow Times. In 2004, his new family left for the Dominican Republic but returned to Russia the following year, leaving the boy with a local taxi driver who had transported the family around the island, and his wife. It's thought the boy may have been traded for cocaine, said Russian news website Gzt.ru, without citing any source.
The boy was placed in a temporary government shelter for young victims of domestic violence in 2008 when allegations surfaced that the Dominican foster family was mistreating him. Khokhryakov, who was given a new name, Diego Sologub, has completely forgotten the Russian language, according to news reports.
The Russian couple was arrested for drug trafficking in Russia.
Khokhryakov is being accompanied by Russian Presidential Ombudsman for Children Pavel Astakhov on his trip back to Russia.
"In Russia, Khokhryakov will be placed in a new foster family and a customized rehabilitation program that will provide him with psychological, educational, judicial and other required support", said Astakhov.
Russian news services say that he will have to spend the next ten days at a hospital, where he will receive a full medical check-up and all the necessary inoculations.
