Research by the Institute of Microbiology and Parasitology of Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) has found that the beaches located between Boca Chica to Juan Dolio and Palenque on the southern coast of the island are severely contaminated by bacteria that can cause skin and ear infections, as well as other more serious health hazards. She explained that same can be said for the beach of Guibia, in Santo Domingo city. The report states that the contamination is caused by sewer discharges into the sea. The report, which was presented by Vice-Chancellor of Research and Graduate Studies, Clara Benedicto, at a recommends re-directing sewage disposals towards other areas. She said that resources needed to be invested in improving water sources, or the country would not have suitable beaches within 20 years, as reported by Diario Libre. She offered the services of the UASD research department to assist the government in finding solutions to the problems of contamination of coasts.
Technical Ministry of the Presidency engineers are at present honing final details to start a World Bank project for improvement of wastewater treatment installations for Juan Dolio as part of a general beach regeneration program expected to be completed by year's end, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism. A first part of the program was recently completed for Puerto Plata on the north coast.

Likewise, sewage works in Boca Chica after advanced after hotels integrated town and private systems to the hotel systems.
