On the last leg of his 13-day US tour, President Leonel Fernandez visited Chicago and threw out the first pitch at the Cell Stadium on Saturday. Before the game started, Fernandez met with Dominican players Rafael Perez, Fausto Carmona, Andy Martes, Alejandro de Aza, Tony Pena Jr and Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta and signed autographs. He returned home on Sunday, arriving at the San Isidro Military Airport.
In Chicago, President Fernandez met with Dominican residents at an event organized by the DR consulate.
He also attended a luncheon meeting organized by Mike Axelrod with members of the Chicago Chamber of Commerce where he promoted business to the DR. In its report on the luncheon, a columnist in the Chicago Sun Times observed that Mike Axelrod, who is the son of White House senior adviser David Axelrod, has set up a consulting firm, Grant Park Global, which is focusing on overseas business development and public affairs. Mike Axelrod was incidental in bringing the President Fernandez to a luncheon at Gibsons in Chicago, co-hosted by the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.
The Presidency reported that in his welcoming words chamber of commerce president Gerald Roper said that the DR is attracting the attention of the world's largest corporations represented in Chicago.
The attendees also included Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Chicago Cubs who announced the expansion of the club's baseball academy in the DR in 2011; Eduardo Conrado, chief marketing officer for Motorola Broadband Mobility Solutions in Chicago; Manuel Flores, chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission; Rik Geiersbach, vice president, corporate strategy at Boeing; Kimbal T. Goluska of Chicago architecture and planning firm The Chicago Consultants Studio, Inc.; Bill Hood managing director at American Airlines in charge of transportation, trucking and railroads for the Greater Chicago Area.
Katie McClain, the Clinton Climate Initiative's city director for Chicago; Fred Niehaus, senior vice president of global public affairs with Western Union; Ash Padwal, president of Allied Telesis Capital Corp., the technology-financing arm of Allied Telesis Holdings K.K. of Tokyo, Japan; and Manuel Sanchez, a founding partner at Sanchez, Daniels & Hoffman, LLP.
On the political front, his Chicago host Mike Axelrod's father is David Axelrod, credited with being instrumental in helping President Barack Obama reach the Presidency in 2008, and who will work on Obama's re-election campaign.
Also met with political professional Larry Grisolano, a partner in AKPD, a leading politician support group.
El Caribe reports that President Fernandez received an award from the Governor of Illinois Pat Quinn, for his political, social and educational leadership. He also met with the Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley and his wife Maggie Daley at the City Hall.
On this trip, Fernandez visited New York, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and Chicago meeting with business, academic and government groups.
President Fernandez was accompanied by First Lady Margarita Cedeno, CEI-RD director Eddy Martinez, chief of military corps Major General Hector Medina Medina, and assistant Danilo Perez.
