According to statistics from the National Council of Population and Family (Conapofa), there are 844,996 people over the age of 65 in the DR, or 9% of the population. Of these, 233,195 are over 75, and half, or 484,145 live in the National District and the Province of Santo Domingo. Geriatrician Maria Luisa Hernandez Cruz gave out these figures on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons at Plaza de la Salud Hospital.
However, Ariadna Garrido, director of Family Medicine practice at the Plaza de la Salud, says that World Health Organization statistics indicate that people over 65 make up 15% of the Dominican population and are the most neglected segment of Dominican society. She said that in Dominican culture the elderly are not valued by society. "People do not understand," she said, "that they represent wisdom, a job fulfilled, and experience."
