The US Department of State has announced that Caddell Construction of Montgomery, Alabama has been awarded the US$148.8 million contract to build a new embassy compound that will be located in Santo Domingo's Altos de Arroyo Hondo area. Plans are for the new facility to be in operation by 2013. The project consists of a chancery, a support annex/warehouse, Marine Security Guard Quarters, recreation facilities, three compound access control facilities and related site development. The compound will accommodate more than 500 employees.
The ambassador's home, which was built in 1950 at the intersection between Cesar Nicolas Penson and Leopoldo Navarro streets, will remain at the same location.
At present, more than 15 US government agencies are located in eight offices throughout the city. The plan is to concentrate them in one single location.
The current consular office building provides services to more than 300,000 people annually, but has inadequate waiting room space. Visa applicants currently need to wait their turn in a hall affected by sweltering heat.
