Santo Domingo's Calle El Conde Street, rich in history and architectural gems, is getting a facelift. Pinturas Tropical has pledged to provide paint to renovate the facades of 60 buildings. Work began this week with the renovation of the first 25. The budget is estimated at RD$10 million.
The program is the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster's baby for the celebration of Santo Domingo American Capital of Culture.
The buildings that are being renovated include the Baquero, for many years the tallest in Santo Domingo, and the Copello, of historic importance related to the 1965 Revolution. As reported in Diario Libre, there are 100 buildings on Calle El Conde, a pedestrian street framed by businesses and shops. Xiomara Espaillat, executive director of the Historic Center of the City of Santo Domingo says the first 25 buildings seek to encourage businesses to pick up where they leave off.
One of the shopowners, Manuel Luna, said the initiative would be a big step towards restoring the face of the street that he described as a "dump". He expects more people to visit Calle El Conde once the works are completed.
Architect Jose Emilio Brea called the action "cosmetic" facelift, saying that authorities have yet to decide upon an integrated solution to rescue the area, in an article in today's Diario Libre.
