President Leonel Fernandez visited La Romana yesterday to cut the ribbon at the inauguration of a new branch of Plaza Lama. Covering an area of 16,000 square meters, the department store joins Jumbo and Semma as nationwide stores located in La Romana. Other large supermarkets and department stores serving La Romana town are home-based Iberia, Orense Plaza and HiperRomana. There is even a small El Nacional Supermarket, but it is inside La Marina de Casa de Campo, restricted mainly to visitors or residents in the exclusive complex.
The new Plaza Lama is located at Calle Francisco Richiez Docoudray at the intersection with Fray Juan Utrera. The store, which represents a US$20 million investment, has created 700 new jobs for La Romana, said company president Mario Lama Handal, who mentioned that Plaza Lama has been in the market now for 81 years.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Leonel Fernandez said that the store was opening because of the DR's economic stability and prospects for growth. He compared the 1.5% GDP growth forecasts for Latin America and Caribbean with the DR's 5.5% projection. "The impact of the economic crisis has been mitigated in comparison with the rest of the region, which makes it possible for stores of this category to open," he said.
Plaza Lama has two stores in Santo Domingo. The company also announced the opening of a fourth store in Santiago in 2011.
