Fenatrano transporters want a piece of the action on the Autopista 6 de Noviembre to San Cristobal route (Ruta 66). This is not to the liking of their competitors, Conatra transporters. Yesterday the rival factions clashed, firing pellet guns and throwing rocks. Some 40 drivers were reported injured and taken to hospitals in San Cristobal, while several buses were damaged, as reported in Hoy. A Police SWAT team arrested dozens of drivers from each group.
As reported in Hoy, most of the union leaders say that the Technical Ground Transport Office (OTTT) in charge of regulating the allocation of routes has been unable to settle the disputes between Fenatrano and Conatra.
Meanwhile, Diario Libre criticized what they called the "cowardly aggression" against their reporter Adonis Diaz and photographer Jose Justo Feliz who were covering the incident. They also said that the Police response had been "feeble". They said the Police limited themselves to protecting the reporters, even though the protesting drivers were threatening public order and free movement of citizens, and endangering the lives of passengers and passers-by.
"To tell the truth, streets belong to the criminals. A country that rules itself by the law of the strongest cannot call itself a civilized nation" said the newspaper in an editorial today. The newspaper says they will take the aggression against their reporters and damage to their equipment to court.
