The National Consumer Rights Protection Institute (Pro-Consumidor) said yesterday that it has never renounced its mandate for approving contracts, as recognized by the Superintendent of Banks. Pro-Consumidor has the right to review standard form contracts in order to establish whether they include unfair clauses that prejudice consumers.
Pro-Consumidor director Altagracia Paulino clarified the issue in a communication sent to the Commercial Banking Association (ABA), with copies to the BHD, Popular, BanReservas, Leon and Progreso banks.
Diario Libre says that Paulino made it clear that "we have never renounced our legal obligation, so these boilerplate contracts need to be registered according to the law, in this agency (Pro-Consumidor)".
The case of banks charging interest on paid balances is again in the news.
