In a not unexpected move, the ruling PLD party's Central Committee has decided to extend the mandate of the current leadership for another five-year period - which must be confirmed by a plebiscite - and convened the VIII Ordinary Congress in memory of Norge Botello. Over 75% of the membership of the Central Committee attended Saturday's meeting.
It was also decided that Cesar Pina Toribio would chair the VIII Congress.
The official name of the congress will be VIII Ordinary Congress Comandante Norge Botello. The title refers to the role Botello played in the 1965 revolution when he headed a command post at the intersection of Jacinto de la Concha and Felix Maria Ruiz streets in the Villa Francisco section of the capital.
Reinaldo Pared Perez told reporters that the idea of extending the current mandate for the party leadership was based on the fact that the upcoming presidential elections in 2012 are the top priority. In fact, he said, the other elections, of provincial and municipal party leaders was going to be put off until after the 2012 elections.
