The stores along Santo Domingo's Winston Churchill Avenue are joining forces to fight the wave of criminal activities that have attracted a lot of media attention lately with pregnant women and young children taking part in robberies and shoplifting. Before the end of the year, the big stores and the chain stores, banks and other institutions on Winston Churchill Avenue will begin a pilot plan with video cameras in an attempt to reduce the number of thefts and criminal acts to a minimum in the area. The project is an initiative by Deputy Pelegrin Castillo who recently expressed his concern about the situation. It is supported by the big commercial centers and banking institutions along this commercial avenue, according to Pedro Perez, the president of the National Organization of Commercial Enterprises (ONEC).
Diario Libre reports that so far eleven businesses have said they would join the monitoring system. These are Plaza Lama, BHD, Scotia Bank, Centro Comercial Plaza Central, Acropolis, Banco de Reservas, Banco Popular, La Universal, Blue Mall, La Sirena and Banco de Progreso.
Perez said that they have convened the business all along Winston Churchill Avenue, as well as banks and other entities, some of which have already installed security equipment and video cameras, and the idea of the meeting is to form a sort of video network.
