El Caribe published a story on Saturday that says unofficial sources are talking about hundreds of Dominican military personnel, government officials, legislators and businesspeople linked to the case of Puerto Rican drug baron Jose Figueroa Agosto.
A Dominican magazine highlights "the uncover presence of 10 federal agents from the United States who are patiently investigating officials, military personnel and big Dominican legislators, not only on money laundering of drug money, but also for other behaviors tied to the management of public funds". The magazine is the Gaceta Judicial, the September issue, whose cover story is titled: "Leonel Fernandez, between Angels and Demons". It says that the President would be wrong to run for office again in 2012. Magazine editor Jose Luis Taveras is the author of the nine-page article. In addition, one researcher has even put numbers, but not names to the issue. Angel Martinez, a Dominican living in New York, who identifies himself as a detective well-versed in drug trafficking and federal crimes, presents the following numbers: 277 military and police personnel, including Navy, National Police, DNCD and DNI; 93 businesspeople, 7 bank managers, 15 bank employees, 10 car dealers, 8 construction companies, 5 supermarket owners, 19 money exchange houses; and finally, 22 politicians "of high and medium rank" and 8 deputies. Martinez told journalist Huchi Lora that the eight who are currently on trial are not the only ones involved.
According to Martinez, Figueroa Agosto struck a deal with federal officials and gave them "too much information", part of which led to the arrest of 130 people in Puerto Rico last week.
Presidential drug advisor Marino Vinicio Castillo has said openly that the Puerto Rican operation will have direct effects on the DR. "Figueroa Agosto has spoken and others must have too," he said as reported in El Dia.
