If your electricity meter is missing or suspected to have been stolen, report it immediately. El Caribe reports that electricity meter robberies are happening. The stolen meters are then sold for installation in households that do not have contracts with the Edes as a way to evade paying for electricity. The robberies usually take place in apartment buildings that have multiple meters, especially in the Quisqueya, El Millon, Las Praderas and Gustavo Mejia Ricart areas of Santo Domingo. The victims of these robberies were perplexed until the Police explained that this was a new kind of electricity fraud.
The victims of electricity meter theft need to report this immediately, so as not to become a double victim. The household from where the meter was stolen could be penalized by the power distribution company with fines of RD$30,000. The power distribution company deems the user has violated the meter.
