Listin Diario reports today that electric fences and gates are becoming more common in Santo Domingo as citizens seek to protect themselves from the threat of theft. The newspaper reports that these are also being used for protecting construction materials on building sites. The report says that the electric shock that intruders would receive is not life threatening.
Listin Diario says that ironically, there is a downside to the costly electrified fences. "This protection system is not totally secure because even the gates are stolen. Demand for metal makes criminals steal them for resale", according to the report.
"The robbers no longer have to get inside the house to steal. Outside the house they have an object that generates money," said Dulce Carrasco who complained that her outside metal grid door was stolen in Gualey.
