At the preliminary hearings in the Sobeida-Agosto case, district prosecutors presented evidence against the eight people suspected of money laundering and ties to Jose David Figueroa Agosto's drug trafficking network, as reported in Hoy. The prosecutors said that the eight had served as fronts for more than 10 companies used by the Puerto Rican drug capo for the purchase of properties, luxury cars, firearms and large fortunes in money and jewels.
As reported in Hoy, the prosecutor presented proof that Sobeida Felix Morel was responsible for paying for apartments 14 and 15B of the Alco Paradisso luxury high-rise apartment building, allegedly in complicity with her lover Figueroa Agosto. The electricity and cable TV services of Apartment 15B where he lived were in his name. The investigators are holding Sobeida Felix Morel responsible for possession of US$4.4 million in cash, firearms, keys and three of the four SUVs confiscated at the Alco Paradisso building. They claim that she paid US$590,000 and US$605,000 for the apartments, that she made frequent trips to Puerto Rico, and that she was the owner of a fourth SUV confiscated in the parking lot, with keys that were in her possession.
At the hearing yesterday, judge Claribel Nivar Arias said that Sobeida Felix does not show up in the Dominican financial system as having the economic capacity to purchase the properties or the goods that were in her possession.
In regards to charges against Sobeida Felix's ex-husband Eddy Brito, the prosecutors said that he purchased the Mathey Investment company to hide the illicit origin of Figueroa Agosto's money and operations and the purchase of a residence in Arroyo Hondo II for US$850,000 that was later sold to Mary Pelaez Frappier for US$850,000, undervalued by RD$10.5 million. The prosecutor says that since 2008 the house had alarm services in the name of Cristian Almonte Peguero, the fake identity used by Figueroa Agosto. Prosecutors say that Brito did not have enough money to justify these multi-million peso transactions and that he tried to purchase another property together with Sobeida. The prosecutors said that investigations had established that Eddy Brito and Sobeida Felix's home on Calle Burende in Los Cacicazgos had been purchased by Figueroa Agosto.
In the case of Pelaez Frappier, she was accused of purchasing the Arroyo Hondo house that was in Brito's possession. She also bought several companies and was responsible for contracting the floor polishing services for Figueroa Agosto's house in Arroyo Hondo and for an apartment in Naco. Prosecutors accuse her of possession of apartment 1132 in the Ocean One condominium in Cabarete, Puerto Plata and of changing the keys to the main door after the escape of Figueroa Agosto, in whose names the payments for maintenance had been established. In the case of Pelaez Frappier, Dr. Edgar Contreras is mentioned as the doctor to whom Figueroa Agosto referred her to for plastic surgery. The doctor said that the Puerto Rican had told him that Mary was the person who made purchases sold dollars for him.
