Following heated debates in the press between hotel sector representatives and the city government about responsibilities for maintenance of the Malecon, the local authority has got down to work. Diario Libre reports that intense works have begun to fix up the city's sea-fronting boulevard. A brigade of 180 council workers is working on sprucing up the trees and rain drainage systems, plus garbage crews removing debris.
Urban Cleansing Director Jose Miguel Martinez Guridy told Diario Libre that the works would concentrate on the stretch between Abraham Lincoln Avenue and Plaza Juan Baron, and then on to Malecon with Santome. In coming weeks, works will continue from Lincoln on to the west side of the 14 km thoroughfare.
Diario Libre reports that the CDEEE has pledged to light up the Malecon, with the installation of new lighting posts.
The president of the National Association of Hotels & Tourism, Julio Llibre, and the president of the Hotel Association of Santo Domingo Roberto Henriquez had been publically pressing for government funding and attention for the Malecon. They were particularly concerned about the fact that the Malecon was not up to standard for the celebration of the important Florida Caribbean Cruise Association conference 25-29 October in Santo Domingo.
