Falconbridge Dominicana has announced the reopening of work at the mine and foundry in Monsignor Nouel province after a two-year shutdown. However, they said that the mine would only be operating at 50% capacity. The Falconbridge facility in Bonao is one of only a few of its type in the world, capable of starting production within 24 hours after shutting down for any length of time. According to El Caribe, the goal is to produce approximately 14,000 metric tons of ferro-nickel by March of 2011. Improving market conditions led to the reopening, according to Falcondo Xstrata Nickel. The company immediately began hiring and rehiring the qualified personnel needed to run the operation. Company spokesman Luis Rosado said that the company has signed a deal with AES Dominicana to provide energy during the process of switching over to natural gas. Although the mining and smelting operations were closed down, the company went on supplying electricity to the national grid and continued to support the company's community programs in the Bonao area.
