One person has been killed, five were injured and several are under arrest following violent street protests in Moca and Licey. Protestors were demanding better electricity supplies, street repairs, highways and other priorities. Meanwhile, activists in Bonao started a 48-hour strike in demand of several social improvements. Diario Libre reports that the person who was killed was an accounting student from the University Regional Center in Santiago (CURSA), Alfredo Gomez, 28, who was hit by several bullets in the midst of the confrontation between members of the SWAT team and the demonstrators.
The spokesperson for the Broad Front of Popular Struggle (FALPO), Victor Breton, warned that the protests would continue for an indefinite period in Licey, Moca and Navarrete until the police authorities arrest the agents who he says killed the student. Another five people were wounded in Licey during the fighting that began in the early hours of the morning. Eight arrests were reported.
Most businesses and schools in Licey were closed during yesterday's unrest. Several streets in the city center were blocked with burning tires, tree trunks and other objects, while a large police and military contingent patrolled the streets. The protest demonstrations also extended to Navarrete in protest at the death of student Alfredo Gomez.
