The Fundacion Brugal has announced that educator Manuel (Manny) Vidal Ramirez will be the guest of honor at the 19th Brugal Cree en su Gente Awards ceremony, today, 14 October at the Casa San Pablo in Santo Domingo.
Vidal's story first became known in the DR through a Listin Diario feature by J.C. Malone. Malone reported how the magna cum laude engineering graduate of the state university UASD had traveled to NY where he found work at a bodega doing all sorts of jobs and driving a taxi cab while studying English. Running into a friend he learned of teaching jobs in mathematics at Hostos Community College and successfully applied. His earnings were less than as a taxi driver, but it was a less risky job with better prospects. He is the son of a veteran teacher in San Francisco de Macoris. In the process he began to regularize his status in the US. Malone reports that he went on to teach at Marta Valle High School, while completing a masters in education at the City University of New York, all while being an illegal resident. He later studied for a second masters in administration and school supervision at Fordham University, when he was appointed director of the Marta Valle High School. There he revamped the mathematics course and his students responded by achieving results ranked among the highest test scores, attendance and behavior in the public school system.
Franklin Baez Brugal, president of the Fundacion Brugal, sees Ramirez as an example for other Dominicans. "Our country urgently needs quality education to be guaranteed for future generations. We want our guest of honor at the 19th Awards to be an example for all who want to change the sad reality we have in our classrooms today," said Baez Brugal, upon making the announcement.
