The Dominican Republic baseball team scored a big one by defeating Cuba 5-2 in the championship game of the World Cup/Pan American Games qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico last night.
The Dominican team blasted their five runs in the first inning and pitcher Lorenzo Barcelo controlled the Cuban nine. A combination of Tony Batista, Alexis Gomez and Victor Mercedes produced the first five runs against Cuba's veteran right-handed starter Norge Luis Vera.
Cuba had several chances to eat away at the Dominicans' lead, the best coming in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with none out but failed to score. They scored their second run in top of the ninth.
The Dominicans beat Cuba twice in the tournament (9-6 in the quarterfinal round) and also defeated USA 7-2 in their semifinal match up. The Dominican team had already recently won the gold in the Central American and Caribbean Games held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in July. The baseball victory, though, is sweeter. The Cubans did not compete in the Mayaguez Games, and thus the defeat consolidates the Dominican team's position as leaders in the Caribbean.
El Nuevo Dia of Puerto Rico writes that the Dominican team almost didn't participate in the Pre-World because of a lack of funds. To make the finals, the DR defeated the USA team 7-2.
