The government proposes to add 642 megawatts of electricity to the national grid next year in response to the country's economic growth and public demand. Diario Libre says that the authorities are also planning to have 1,600 megawatts for 2013, which will bring the total for these two years to 2,242 megawatts.
According to a report from the State Electricity Companies (CDEEE), during the current administration headed by Celso Marranzini since August 2009, some 356.5 megawatts have been added, including some from private sources.
Some of the megawatts that will be added in 2011 will come from AES Dominicana's San Lorenzo plant, about 34 megawatts, another continual 300 megawatts will come from Cogentrix, converted to natural gas, and 33 megawatts will come from wind generation.
There will be 52 megawatts when the repairs are finished on the two generators at the Aguacate dam and 48 megawatts from the repairs on Unit I of Jiguey, as well as 50 megawatts from a new plant in Navarrete and the same amount from a new plant in Boca Chica.
The CDEEE administration told reporters that it is making great efforts to improve the electricity distributors management, because they have to ensure an effective cash flow so that the investments can come in, and make the market more attractive. Marranzini said that this is why they have placed an emphasis on getting the electricity distributors out of their commercial and financial stagnation.
