Deadly pesticides on sale to public

The recent deaths of three young people who drank metomil, a highly toxic pesticide according to the World Health Organization (WHO), highlights, once again, the improper handling of agrochemicals. Products intended for export are rigorously examined for any residuals from a list of restricted chemicals. However, many highly toxic pesticides can be easily purchased at most businesses that cater to farmers. Chemical pesticides and herbicides that are classified as carcinogenic by the United States Environmental Protection Agency are only supposed to be used on certain crops and under strict supervision by trained professionals. However, these regulations are widely flouted in the DR. According to Hoy newspaper, the Ministry of Agriculture has set up educational and monitoring programs for the use of these products.
