Spanish business representatives are studying the possibility of using garbage from Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, to generate electricity. This could involve an investment of US$225 million.
The mayor of Santiago, Gilberto Serulle, met with the Spanish visitors. According to Serulle, the city produces 900 tons of refuse each day, which is capable of generating 100 megawatts of electricity. He said that he had a lot of trust in private investments that could manage the capital and the technology to the highest standards.
According to El Caribe, Serulle offered to provide the land and raw materials if the investors put up the capital, the technology and the experience in this type of project.
