The Central Electoral Board (JCE) is asking for money again. This time the new chief magistrate of the JCE, Roberto Rosario, is asking for half a billion pesos in order to renew the personal identification and voter registration cards known as the "cedula".
Hoy newspaper also reports that JCE members visited the Attorney General to work out the details for gathering biometric markers from 21,000 prison inmates. Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena said that access to the biometric data of the 21,000 inmates would enable the Justice Department to learn the true identities of many of the inmates who tend to use several aliases.
The JCE magistrate also told the Attorney General that the electoral board would provide a password for the Attorney General to access the information contained in the JCE on-line files.
Rosario said that the JCE had obtained biometric details from 3,150,000 citizens, about half the adult population. He said that the JCE is working on a special program to obtain the remaining information.
