The Prosecutor General Office has released a statistical overview on crime for the first seven months of the year. According to statistics from 34 prosecutor offices, they processed 45,632 crime cases nationwide. The main crimes were 10,585 inter-family violence cases (23.2%), followed by 8,726 drug-related cases (19.12%), 6,722 thefts (14.73%), 5,043 brawls (11.05%), 4,533 threats (9.93%) and 994 homicides (2.18%). Also 1,391 sex crimes (3.05%), 32 cases of sexual harassment (0.07%), 189 rapes (0.41%) and 1,804 cases of abuse of minors (3.95%). El Dia reports that it is evident that most of the crimes involve people seeking to make a quick buck. Most of the cases occurred in the National District, with 44.75%, followed by the Province of Santo Domingo with 28.12%. This accounts for almost 73% of cases in Greater Santo Domingo. Santiago had 6.28% of the cases, and Higuey 1.81%. San Pedro de Macoris was next with 1.75%.
Last year reported crime was 77,087 cases, compared to 39,613 in January-July 2010. This indicates that crime is up this year.
