The World Bank has recognized the Dominican Republic for efforts made in the management of statistics. The DR was included among the finalists for the most innovative Latin America and Caribbean programs taking part in the Second Regional Statistical Innovation Competition.
In the Caribbean sub-region, the DR won second place for its 2007 National Household Income and Spending Survey carried out by the National Statistics Office (ONE). The World Bank commented that the survey was carried out with transparency and comprehensiveness throughout the process. The data obtained with it allowed users to investigate household income, measure spending and break down its destination at the product level. It included a participative radio campaign.
ONE is in charge of conducting the 2010 National Census scheduled for 24-30 November nationwide. A total of 177 programs from 26 countries took part in the competition, divided in three categories: censuses, surveys and administrative records. The finalists attended a workshop on data programs in Washington, D.C.
"The World Bank wants to recognize the silent statistical revolution that is taking place in Latin America and the Caribbean. We want to maintain this strategic partnership with all the regional experts on this field, which perform a key service for development", said Marcelo Giugale, World Bank? Economic Policy and Poverty Reduction Program Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, during the awards ceremony.
