The public school breakfast program is making headlines again, this time with a major food poisoning outbreak affecting 126 of 1,077 elementary students at a school in the southwestern province of Azua. Milk supplied by a farmers' cooperative, Proyecto Isura in the region is blamed for the intoxication. Just two days ago the Ministry of Education replaced the previous supplier, Rica, with Isura.
The children developed fever and nausea and 126 were treated at the Taiwan Hospital, with 7 still in hospital and 7 under observation, but none were said to be in a critical condition.
The Ministry of Education provides school breakfasts of juice, milk and bread to millions of public school students nationwide. So far this year there have been 342 cases of food poisoning at public schools, as reported in Hoy.
