Lisandro Macarrulla, the president of the Sans Souci Touristic Investment company (ITSS) currently conducting works in the Port of Santo Domingo area, has called for more government funding for infrastructure in Santo Domingo. He says the investments would stimulate tourism to the city and help it fulfill its full potential as a major tourism destination in the Caribbean.
Macarrulla says a master plan for the development and management of the destination and the necessary infrastructure is lacking. He called for including projects such as transferring the 27 de Febrero Naval Base, cleaning up pollution in the Ozama River, initiatives to improve the Colonial City and Santa Barbara area, remodeling the Santo Domingo Malecon and the surroundings of the Sans Souci cruise ship terminal in the National Budget.
"The success of tourism and economic development projects such as Sans Souci and others developed by the private sector depend on the government carrying out the infrastructure support works," said Macarrulla. He said that the reconversion of the Port of Santo Domingo and the city seafront, and the real estate program under ITSS alone could generate 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, benefiting construction, transport, bars and restaurants, commerce, farming, and electricity and water services industries. He estimated potential investment at US$914 million, as reported in Diario Libre.
