The free zone sector is campaigning for Congress to pass a bill reforming the duty free zone law. Luisa Fernandez of the National Council of Free Zones, Eduardo Bogaert of the Association of San Pedro de Macoris Free Zones and Jose Manuel Torres of the Dominican Association of Free Zones (Adozona) met at the offices of El Caribe to announce the XIV Latin American Conference on Free Zones that will take place from 27 to 29 October in Punta Cana at the Paradisus Palma Real resort, as reported in the newspaper.
Luisa Fernandez says the law dates back to 1990, prior to the days of logistics, call centers, free trade agreements and other changes. She said the new legal framework provides judicial guarantees to investors and a longer-term scenario for investments and the expansion of those already in existence. Apparel, which at one time made up almost 90% of all exports, now only accounts for 32%.
Torres says the conference is important because these are days when many US companies that were manufacturing in China would consider moving closer to home. Torres said there are 53 free zone parks in the US. Free zones are responsible for around 120,000 jobs in the DR.
The conference will discuss the challenges facing the sector worldwide.
