A group of young women have marched in white wedding dresses to protest violence against women. The activity commemorated the murder of 39-year old Dominican migrant Gladys Ricart on her wedding day in 1999. The march, which took place at the UASD state university was led by Roxanna Reyes, prosecutor for women's affairs in the DR, and Josie Ashton, founder of the March for the Brides from the US.
The march sought to raise public awareness of the problems of domestic violence. Reyes said that in the DR, a small country, domestic violence is responsible for twice as many deaths as in Spain, a country with three times the population, as reported in Hoy. She encouraged women to report cases of violence, and not to live in fear and intimidation. Domestic violence is the leading cause of homicide in the DR, followed by drug trafficking.
